Eco Friendly Decorations by P2/3

πŸ’šSustainable Decorations!πŸ’š

Miss Baxter set her class the challenge of making eco friendly decorations using everyday objects which they recycled. Learning for sustainability in a real life context!
Have look at what they designed and made at home!
Festive Nieve and her snow globe!
Gulshin with Santa's sleigh and an angel, all made by recycling used paper.
Made from girders?! Alyssa used the label from an Iron Brush bottle to decorate her gift!
Kian crafted his snow globe from a jam jar and made it sparkly by adding sequins to the water inside it!
Jessica used marshmallows to make her edible snowman.
Nevaeh made hers from an old lightbulb this tree decoration now sparkles  thanks to the glitter adorning it and the other bauble is decorated with bits of an old CD.
Lewis made an elf using a toilet roll and scraps of paper-he was quite keen to pull it like a cracker.
Maria's Santa is so sweet, don't you agree?

Plastic isn't that fantastic!

Leon in P7 chose Space Junk as his topic for his research task, rather alarming to hear how much rubbish is now floating in space ....
The coloured dots show the rubbish.
Leon's presentation

Inspired by Blue Planet 2, the Eco Committee start work on reducing plastic litter and raising awareness of how we can all reduce our plastic consumption. They hope to present their information to the school at an assembly in January.

Hoe! Hoe! Hoe! (Apologies to Santa!)

I had a spare afternoon in my diary withe the end of Forest School for 2017 and so a group of "volunteers" assembled and we blitzed the poly tunnel in and hour and a half! Weeding, pruning, harvesting and sweeping up done!  A fantastic effort and it looked so neat and tidy once it was rid of the old straggly crops. We even found some carrots, parsnips, spring onions and a cauliflower-our FIRST and only cauliflower!
We've left a couple of potatoes in place and a few spring onions and the recycled the rest of the foliage.
Before...

and after! Ta-dah!!!

Something is taking shape...

Mrs Thomas met with the Eco Committee and Pupil Council member today to share some rather exciting news with them. The children were given the chance to provide feedback on behalf of the school and asked many pertinent questions about this exciting venture. More to follow but until then our lips are sealed!

Our Bumper Crop

The pupils of the school are so thrilled to have a poly tunnel and despite the damage done to it by vandals, there was a bumper crop to be harvested this month! Organically grown and carefully tended to by many of the classes in the school. The children have taken so much pride in caring for their crops. We had crops of radishes, peas, beetroot, salad leaves and giant sunflowers growing earlier in the year!

What a seasonal spread!

Carrots and Sweetcorn freshly picked!

A foot long parsnip and there are more to come!

We are looking forward to sampling as many of these.

The kitchen staff made parsnip crisps to sample at our Harvest Service and the corns have been frozen for use at a later date and the pumpkins are going to come in handy for a certain school disco....πŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŒ½πŸŒ½πŸŒ½πŸŒ½πŸŒ½πŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŽƒπŸŽƒ

WE WOULD LOVE ANY GREEN FINGERED ENTHUSIASTS TO COME AND HELP....

Our Eco Committee!

Hello and welcome to Linnvale's Eco Committee-we have a new group of Eco warriors ready and keen to improve our natural world and local environment!

Our pupil committee representatives are: Robert, and Ria from P1; Adam and Roksana from P2; Gulshin and Aymin from P2/3; Sophie from P4/3, Georgia and Craig from P4/5; Alfie and Rebecca from P5; Keira C from P6/7J, Jamie, Emily K and Kayden from P6/7G, and Tommy and Dylan from P6/7D.  Miss Guthrie, Mr Russell, Zak's mum and Sophie's mum are also on our committee. We meet every Monday at 11:45-12:15 at the red couches to discuss our work and decide what our next steps are.

We are in the process of submitting our application to renew our Green Flag for the Eco work we did from 2015-2017.

We have also carried out our Environmental Review throughout the school and all classes helped us by filling in the questionnaires. Our three focus topics for 2017-2019 will be Litter, Waste Minimisation and Biodiversity.

We have drafted our action plans for these three areas and created a display in the hall. Our first aim is to purchase bird houses and new bird feeders and Mr Russell has agreed to put the bird houses up. The next step will be to sort a rota to fill the bird feeders/find a volunteer to help us at lunchtimes to oversee this. It's all go!

Please get in touch if you wish to help us or have any suggestions.

Thanks!
