Recycling news!

We are able to collect empty crisp packets and send them away to be recycled into benches and fencing! Any brand of crisps will do whether it's an individual packet or a sharing bag! Our recycled recycling bins are located in the infant entrance, the upper school entrance there is one in the nursery too!

Remembrance Service at Linnvale Primary School

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Eco Maths work by P4 and P4/5

Maths is often used by the Eco Committee to count and measure the number of batteries/stamps/pens/paper  we recycle so i thought I would show some of the work which has been done by other classes.

P4/5 have been looking at the length of some large marine creatures as they have been learning about the impact plastic has on the inhabitants of the oceans. They were given a list of creatures and they estimated the length of each creature. Then they compared their estimations with the actual answer and measured the lengths out-they were quite amazed by the length of some!

Primary 4 worked with Miss Fraser to sort a variety of birds into two different categories. The children worked with a partner and chose the criteria then sorted the images. Here are some examples of their work!

John Muir Groups Litter Pick

The two groups both suggested (independently of each other) to carry out a litter pick along at Strauss Avenue, both groups also cleared pieces of litter from Kirkwood Eve. We bumped into the Linnvale Community volunteers who also were out clearing the canal path of litter.
Both groups remarked on how they felt proud and pleased with themselves for tidying up the local area. Well done to our pupils- you are responsible citizens!

This is the final harvest of vegetables from our poly tunnel this year. P2/1 pupils have planted red onions to grow over the winter and we have a rhubarb bed underway now.
Families were encouraged to take something from the table and try it at home today.

Willow weaving

With our Remembrance Service drawing closer, a group of P7 pupils came out to cut and weave willow wreaths for the three P6/7 classes to use at the service. The girls worked in pairs and did a fabulous job making their wreaths-the P6/7 teachers were delighted when they saw what had been produced!

Sad start to the day

I  think the stunned and saddened reaction from the pupils, parents and staff of our school community when the news of the deliberate fire in our memorial garden showed how much this area of our school means to us all. Demi Adams and Sophie Rae are still thought of and remembered as children learn and respect this area of our school grounds. They understand it is a peaceful part of our school used for reflection and a chance to pause and think.
The bench and raised bed gardens had been the work of Mrs Wilkinson and the students of Clydebank College.
Despite the despicable action of the youths who torched the bench and set a alight two of our compost bins, a pallet from our bug house and a picnic bench, we won't let this spoil our area and we hope, as a school,  to restore memorial garden to its former glory.

Spiced Marrow Curry

P1/2 pupils from Miss Macdonald's class and Miss Black's class were out in the poly tunnel last week planting rhubarb and red onions to give us something to look forward to gathering in the coming months!

Normally this is page where the children share what they have been doing but for once I am posting this as I tried something new-a Linnvale grown marrow! I brought a small marrow home and one of the aubergines and managed to rustle up a vegetarian marrow curry using a recipe from the BBC Good Food website-quick and tasty! I haven't eaten marrow for years and just fancied trying a new way of cooking it rather than baking it in the oven with a bolognaise topping.

Busy start!

Just a wee sample of what has been happening at Linnvale...biodiversity seemed to be the common theme as we were out exploring what was living and growing within the school grounds this week!

Nearly Ready to Pick!

🌻The beautiful sunflowers grew from seeds dropped from last year's plants and have attracted the bees into our poly tunnel. The bees have been busy pollinating the flowers and our crops have been growing!🌻

As the young folk in our school return tomorrow, I am excited at showing them the result of their care and hard work-from the gardening club to the Eco Committee to the ones who have carried watering cans out before school ended for summer and to our team of summer helpers as well! Your efforts and time have made this happen, Thank you, thank you, thank you!👏👏👏

We will harvest our crops over the next few weeks and they will be counted, weighed, measured and then eaten! The sugar snap peas are still going strong and are sweet and juicy-eat them with the pods on and they are so much sweeter than supermarket ones.

Just a quick update-the hot spell has helped this year's crops grow.
A HUGE thank you to our poly tunnel helpers-we have staff, parent and pupil helpers who've come in to water the plants and how the plants have thrived thanks to their time and effort!

As well as this a very kind grandpa has been in weeding the polytunnel over the holidays and he has also mended the damaged cover. It looks great! He also dug over all the beds and cleared them for the gardening club as the soil was solid. Without his hard work there wouldn't have been much growing this year, so thank you so much for all you have done.

I'm sure that the children will be flabbergasted when they see how their plants have grown-a sneak preview is below.
