Eco Assembly 16th February 2018

The whole school gathered on Friday afternoon to share with each other what they had been learning about. It was a very interesting afternoon of singing, acting, showing and talking.

Thankfully the planet looks as if it will be in excellent hands in the years to some as our young people talked passionately and knowledgeably about biodiversity, waste minimisation, litter and the impact that each has on our planet.

Here is a small sample of their work from the Eco fortnight...
A very handy desk tidy by Kyle made from reused products!

Marks' plant pot holder-isn't it beautiful!

Primary 1 learned about the importance of recycling and shared photos of their learning through play with us.

P2 brought their samples along to the assembly.

P2 wrote to the school voicing concern about the damage that litter can do to the environment.

Litter posters were shown!

Food chain illustrations.

These young p2/3 designers made new products from existing goods. What a talented bunch!

P5 rose to the challenge of making something new from an item which would normally be thrown out-how innovative!

Bicycle helmet hanging baskets; lollipop stick bird houses; t-shirt cushions, cardboard desk tidy; coffee tin money box; plastic bottle money box and a bedsheet transformed into a cushion!

P6/7J collected rather alarming data about the litter in the streets around our school.

The local park was tidied up and the results were shocking!

P6/7J weighed each bag of rubbish gathered.

They found over 1 piece of litter per metre walked on their litter pick!

A colourfully crafted birdhouse fit for our feather friends!

A new use for this packaging- a toy storage system!

Making old t-shirts look like new with a vibrant design!

Jana made this delightful desk tidy and gave it to Miss Guthrie (who will take the hint and try and  keep her desk tidier!)

Mrs Dalrymple supervised the building and filling of our brand new bug house!

Biodiveristy:Minibeasts P4/5

Primary 4/5 worked with Mrs Dalrymple today and they went exploring our school grounds for mini-beast and despite the snow, they found many a wee beastie and bug lurking in the nooks and crannies! They returned to class with their data and collated the numbers: next they are working on how to share their findings with the school!

Eco Fortnight Begins!

Today marked the second day of our focus on sustainability: the school is split into three groups and each group is looking at one of Eco topics. These are litter, waste minimisation and biodiversity.

P1A and P1B-Waste Minimisation-Recycling your rubbish
P2-Litter-Putting Litter in its Place
P2/3-Litter-Looking after our School Environment
P3/4-Waste Minimisation-What does it mean to be Biodegradable?
P4/5-Biodiversity-Bird Feeders and Big Bird Watch
P5-Biodiveristy- Wildflower Garden
P6/7J-Litter: Cleaning up Linnvale's streets
P6/7G-Waste Minimisation-Small Changes Can Make Big Impact
P6/7D-Biodiveristy-Building a Bug House and mini beast surveys

Waste Minimisation inAction-Reusing Waste Material
The Forest School group today went out to tend to our overgrown willow tunnel and they started by weaving the new shoots in between the established growth to strengthen the tunnel. From the top, using loppers, they trimmed the longer woodier shoots which threatened to cause our tunnel to collapse. Instead of composting the pruned lengths, they decided they would like to learn  new skill: willow weaving!
This involved working with a partner and encouraging each other.
Their fabulous first attempts are featured below!

I feel a willow weaving club could appear next year after school...
Trimming the willow tunnel took some time.
The first project: make small willow fence for the wildlife garden!
Teamwork made the job easier.

The group was keen to try another challenge and in only 20 minutes their baskets were taking shape! Aren't they wonderful! Teamwork and taking turns made this a smoother and more efficient process.
