Eco Topics 2020-2022

Some members of the Eco Committee met and selected the next two topics to be worked upon along with the mandatory topic of Litter and they are (drum roll...) Energy and Global Citizenship!
We went through all the responses from the school on the Env Review and made a shortlist of 4 Topics. Each child got two votes and that’s how we selected our topics. Next will be the Sustainable Development Goal.

During an indoor playtime today, Ria made this delightful card from reusing and recycling materials. It’s fantastic!

P5/6 Bug Hotel-the latest work!

P5/6 had a go at adding more features to their bug hotel: a place for solitary bees to live, nests for small mice, cardboard layers for insects to nest in and a wildflower section for pollinators.
Loppers, a drill and hammers were all used safely and responsibly and they worked extremely well together. Great to see such good team work in such a large number of children.

Wild Challenge

P4/5 and P5/6 removed the rotten old bug hotel and binned it and built a new deluxe hotel in its place!
Apologies for muddy clothing-we did have waterproofs and wellies on. Next step is to have a living roof on the big hotel and to give it a name too... that might be a wee competition for the Eco Committee to arrange.
A big thank to Mr Russell for all his help today.

Happy workers

First ladybird of January.

Big Schools Bird Watch

P4/5 and P5/6 are taking part in the RSPB’s bronze Wild Challenge-each class has six challenges to complete and the bird count is one of them.
Both classes have now submitted their totals and have 5 more challenges to do now. Each class got to choose their activities and have chosen a few of the same
challenges. More photos will follow as the weeks progress.
Hopefully their enthusiasm for their feathered friends doesn’t diminish and some of P5/6 took blank bird watch sheets home to do a garden watch.

January means Big Schools Birdwatch

This month P4/5 and P5/6 will be taking part in the RSPB BIg Schools Birdwatch and the pupils will be learning about the common wild birds found around the school and learning their names and identifying features.
P4:5 has carried out their survey and now need to submit their information .
P5/6 couldn’t do their survey this week as the rain came and the birds make themselves scarce in heavy rain.

Reverse Advent

The Eco Committee has been quite amazed by the terrific response to the reverse advent appeal. Toys, food and donations of toiletries have been pouring in and in just over a week a trolley has been filled with donations and boxes of more donations have been added. A collection by the food bank will be arranged and it is hoped we can raise enough items to send another trolley full or more to this deserving cause.
Thank you so much to everyone who had contributed so far. Your donations are greatly appreciated!
